Fixing a Leaking Crack or Seam in an Indianapolis Basement
One wet stripe down a wall is often the cheapest basement problem to fix. The trick is making sure it really is just one.
A leaking crack in a poured concrete basement wall is usually sealed by injecting it with epoxy or polyurethane from the inside. Fixr's 2026 guide puts this at $250–$1,000 per crack; This Old House lists $800–$1,500. It works when the water comes through one or two openings, not along the whole floor edge.
What kind of leak is it?
- A thin vertical crack in poured concrete that darkens after rain: the classic candidate for injection.
- Water around a pipe or wire where it passes through the wall: a sealant or a link seal at the penetration.
- A damp band along the floor edge: the cove joint, where wall meets slab. That is groundwater pressure, and injection rarely fixes it.
- Wet mortar joints or stained block: hollow block holds water inside its cores, and a crack repair alone won't drain it.
How crack injection works
Ports are set along the crack and the surface is sealed over. Resin is pumped in from the bottom port upward until it shows at the next one, filling the crack through the full thickness of the wall. Polyurethane foams and stays flexible, which suits cracks that still let water in. Epoxy cures hard and is often chosen when the crack also needs to carry load. Ask which resin is proposed and why.
When a crack is a warning sign
Wide cracks, cracks that are wider at one end, stair-step cracks in block or a wall that leans inward point to movement, not just a leak. Soil that stays saturated or freezes against a wall can push on it over the years. Have movement looked at before sealing anything, because a sealed crack that keeps opening will leak again.
Why so many cracks show up in spring
Most cracks are present all year and only leak when the soil beside them fills with water. In Indianapolis that is usually March through May, when the three months bring 12.78 inches of precipitation on average (NOAA normals). If several cracks leak at once, or the floor edge is wet too, an interior drain tile system may be cheaper than injecting each crack. Questions homeowners ask
Can I seal a basement crack myself?
Small, dry hairline cracks can be patched with kits from a hardware store. A crack that is actively leaking needs resin pushed through the full wall thickness, which surface patches don't reach.
Does waterproof paint stop leaks?
Not real ones. Coatings cost $1–$8 per square foot (Fixr, 2026) and can slow dampness, but water under pressure lifts them off the wall.
